Placeholders & variable slots
Square brackets mark variable inputs — the parts of a prompt that change with each use. Think of them as blanks you fill in: roles, topics, target audiences, products.
Grouped instructions & requirements
Curly braces group a set of related instructions that belong together. Use them for requirements lists, feature specs, tone rules, or any collection of directives.
Constraints, reminders & guardrails
Parentheses signal hard stops and guardrails. They tell the model what to avoid, what limits apply, and what tone or scope is off-limits.
Advanced Claude structure & metadata
XML tags add machine-readable structure that Claude parses particularly well. Use them to wrap long context blocks, define output schemas, or pass structured data to the model.
Prompt section organization
Markdown headers create clear section boundaries in a prompt. Models parse these as hierarchical signals — # ROLE carries more weight than a plain sentence saying "you are a..."
